WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. After legislation was passed on a federal, provincial and territorial level, the WHMIS law was established on October 31, 1988. This system was enacted for Canadian workers to be informed about the hazardous materials and chemicals they use. Health and safety was the number one concern of businesses so WHMIS was created to combat these issues. The process in which workers are taught WHMIS training that can be separated into two parts. The first being General Education, which refers to the instruction of general information about how WHMIS works and the hazards of the products in question. No workplace is the same, that is why the second form is On-Site Training. This is the on site-specific information that workers are taught when dealing with workplace accidents and emergency procedures.

Since the WHMIS bill was passed, it is a requirement of all Canadian employers to develop a plan, implement workplace safety and maintain workers education programs to ensure hazardous chemicals are handled safely. Employers have a general responsibility to provide workers with hazard information regularly and have common work areas to be labeled with appropriate signage. WHMIS is enforced by the Labour Branch of Human Resources, which are a diligent committee of federal, provincial and territorial legislative agencies, responsible for the health and safety of occupational workplaces.  

The four key components that have been introduced and established by Occupational Health and Safety Canada are labeling of containers, classification of hazards, worker education and training programs, and accomplishment of safety data sheets. The Hazardous Products Act is the foundation of WHMIS. This identifies the responsibilities of stakeholders which include Suppliers, Employers and Workers.

Who’s Responsible for Handling Chemical Products & How?

  • Suppliers: Businesses supplying, selling or importing hazardous products for use or storage in Canada workplaces are required to ensure that containers are labeled with the appropriate information. As well as safety data sheets explaining said materials, being made available for customers.
  • Employers: Training and education programs must be set up for employees that will be exposed to hazardous materials while in the workplace. Employers must also make certain all containers are labeled correctly.
  • Workers: All workers handling hazardous materials or products must attend training programs that have been established by employers.

Annual WHMIS training and review is recommended to keep workers safe. It never hurts to review this material, workers need to be adequately trained and ready for any situation relating to hazardous materials. Keeping workers and workplaces safe is the reason why WHMIS 2015 (GHS) training is so important. All hazardous materials come with their own side effects and potential for danger. While you may be confident in your knowledge and ability to handle chemicals and other hazardous materials, there is always something new to learn to prevent accidents.

Even if a workplace is well trained, accidents can happen resulting in serious side effects. Toxic gas inhalation is a common threat that can seep through protective materials and cause skin irritation. Even if the effects aren’t noticed immediately, symptoms may appear over time. Such as the development of respiratory problems or even cancer. Toxic and hazardous spills occur and are often met with panic. While these incidents are rare, most workers who are unfamiliar with WHMIS 2015/ GHS training, are unprepared for the proper safety procedures. Causing major damage to property, work environment and even long-standing conditions that may affect future workers health.

Businesses that are in violation or to not be adhering to the set rules and regulations of WHMIS, can result in hefty fines. This can obviously have a huge impact on work operations, often halting work resulting in loss of wages and revenue. Jail time might even be an option for the more egregious WHMIS safety offences. This is why it is critical for business owners to prepare workers and invest time in onsite and online training of WHMIS 2015 (GHS).

WHMIS 2015 training can also take place outside the workplace, for future workers to get educated and receive their WHMIS Training Certificate. This independent training can be done through video or online lessons.

WHMIS Online Training operates on a three-step process.

  • Step 1 is to register as a trainee, which can be done online here. Once you have been registered you can login using the password provided by the system.
  • Step 2 involves the actual course training. Once logged in, you can begin the training at anytime and log in and out as often as you need, in order to complete WHMIS training. The course should take you an hour to an hour and a half to complete. It includes video, audio, animation and interactive exercises.
